Zulma was born on May 12, 1972, in San Manuel Chapparron, Jalapa Guatemala to the late Cesar & Domitila Mejia. She made the move to America in 1992. Zulma worked for The New Standard Academy as an interpreter for English and Spanish speaking individuals. Her career also gave her the opportunity to teach young children and share with them her love of music in singing and guitar playing. She had a true gift when it came to working with children; she adored children and children gravitated to her. She naturally was able to connect with them at their level.
When Zulma came to American, she first moved to Chicago making it her home where she raised her one and only daughter, Josephine, despite the difficulties being a single mother, she persevered and was loving and supportive, and beyond brave. Zulma and Josephine loved spending time together watching movies, doing makeovers and sharing her passion of cooking. She volunteered and cooked countless times for the Chicago homeless shelter. She frequently made dishes native to her roots: Tamales, Empanadas and Barbacoa Tacos, and recently she sold her dishes at the farmers markets.
She also lived with her brother, Cesar and wife, and 2 children, creating an unbreakable bond between brother and sister.
Zulma then married Eric Rasmussen on May 28, 2016, in Chicago. They shared a love for the small town of Frankenmuth, which is also where Eric proposed. They shared monthly dates there or either dinner or walking the trails and exploring the town. Zulma and Eric shared a love for the Lord and are members to Center Point Church in Burton. There they taught the 5 year old devotionals on both Sunday and Wednesday. She also had a large part of the out reach programs especially due to her being bilingual. She also frequently helped the homeless and those in need at local soup kitchens. Her most favorite part of worship was singing songs of praise. Even around the house from the moment she got up in the morning she was either singing or humming a song of praise. Zulma and Eric had many travels during their marriage; Chicago, Niagra Falls and Tennessee. She even was able to take Eric to her homeland of Guatemala.
Zulma was known for making a house a "home". She had house pride and enjoyed making her home feel cozy and comfortable. She made the holidays special each and every year. Zulma's family has a spot that can never be filled with her passing. Her gentle soul and bright smile will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Eric Rasmussen; her daughter, Josephine Vivas; her brothers, Ottonial and Cesar; her sisters, Glenda, Arcely and Nancy Mejia; her stepchildren, Savannah Rasmussen, Ashton Rasmussen, Brandon Rasmussen, Preston Williams and Lavinia Williams; and mother-in-law, Regina. Zulma is further survived by many other dear family members and friends too numerous to list but never forgotten. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
