McCARTHY, William Edward. - Age 86, of Grand Blanc, died Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Troy Beaumont Hospital. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30a.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11824 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc withy Rev. Fr. Kenneth Coughlin celebrant. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit. Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Road, Flint from 6:00-8:00p.m. Tuesday, 2:00-8:00p.m. Wednesday and Thursday 9:30a.m. until time of Mass at church. Those desiring may make contributions to Holy Family Catholic Church Parish or the School. Bill was born July 13, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of George and Ruth (Reading) McCarthy, also of Chicago. Bill graduated from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a degree in mechanical engineering, and became a Professional Engineer and a long-time member of Michigan SAE. He began his career at the General Motors Proving Grounds, spent 8 years at Ford Motor Company; then pursued 37 years as a automotive research engineer at Buick in Flint, Michigan. Bill married Annie Cozzarin May 26, 1951 in Detroit. Bill McCarthy and Annie met at the Detroit News Hikers Club, and continued to attend the Hikers annual reunions until recently. During their 57 years of marriage they happily traveled all over the world. They had resided in Grand Blanc since 1960 coming from Detroit. Bill was a member and volunteer of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was active in many social and civic pursuits including Civitan Club, Allegro Dance Club, Granda, Lake Fenton Sailing Club, Boy Scouts for 15 years and hosted Younglife meetings. He conducted Student Government for a Day and was awarded the key to the City of Flint by the Mayor. Surviving are: younger brother Donald Francis (Carmen) McCarthy, 3 children, Gregory (Anne) McCarthy of Sterling Heights, Jan (Ken Conroy) McCarthy of Chicago, IL and Timothy (Julie) McCarthy of Grand Blanc; 4 grandchildren, Erin, Kelly, Megan and Robert McCarthy. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Annie, son, Thomas Robert McCarthy; sisters and brothers, James, Ruth, George, Helen, Marion, Eileen and Lawrence.
