William S. HIGGINS

HIGGINS, William S. - age 85 of Flint, died Monday, November 21, 2011 at his residence. Services will be held 11 AM Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Visitation will be held 3-9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to McLaren Hospice or Flint Area Unity Council of Alcoholics Anonymous. Mr. Higgins was born December 5, 1925 in Salyersville, KY, the son of Virgil McKnight and Emma Lisa (Adams) Higgins. He was a veteran of the U.S. 13th Army Air Corp serving during World War II. Mr. Higgins married Ruth Darlene Brevard on March 6, 1948 in Angola, IN and she preceded him in death on July 30, 2009. He was a truck driver with Anchor Motor Freight for many years and a member of Teamsters Local 580. Bill had over 49 years of sobriety and was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was able to attend the 2010 World AA Conference in San Antonio. Bill loved gardening and fishing and shared that passion with his children and grandchildren. He also was active in the Boy Scouts for many years. Surviving are: four children, Cathy Stewart of Flint, Gary (Carol) Higgins of Corunna, Bruce (Debbie) Higgins of Linden, Greg Higgins of Swartz Creek; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild; sister, Edna Briggs; special friend, Diane Owen; special fishing partner, Ralph and many others; his AA taxi, Jim S. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Woodhaven, McLaren Visiting Nurses and McLaren Hospice.
