BUERKEL, William "Bill" - Linden, MI, died June 2, 2024, at the age of 90. William John Buerkel was born on May 12, 1934, in Bay City, MI, to John and Ida (Roth) Buerkel. He graduated from Bay City Handy High School in 1952. Bill served his country in the US Army and then received a BA in business administration from CMU in 1959. In 1961 he married Janice Radka at Zion Lutheran Church in Bay City, MI. She survives him along with their three sons and daughters-in-law and seven beloved grandchildren: John (Teresa), Berkley, MI, and their children Bethany and Noah; Dr. Daniel (Jill), Petoskey, MI, and their children, Lucas and Katelyn; Steven (April), Indian River, MI, and their children, Austin (Kaley), Brendan, and Lauren. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Betty Lou (Waldo) Fahling, Linden, MI; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A brother, James and sister-in-law Judy, predeceased him. Bill worked for GM in accounting and purchasing for 32 1⁄2 years. He was a member of Linden Kiwanis for 45 years and served as past president. He was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent and taught Sunday School. He is a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church where he served as financial secretary, elder, service coordinator and taught Sunday School and Bible class. For many years, Bill planted and cared for the flowers around the church just as he did around his home. He gave over 100 pints of blood, the gift of the good Lord who blessed him with good health. He was a member of the Linden Athletic Boosters and coached baseball for the Linden Little League and was their first president. He coached all three of his sons. He enjoyed watching all of the sports that they and later his grandchildren played and was an avid Detroit Tigers and Michigan fan. Bill enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his children and grandchildren at Clear Lake and Florida. Bill’s funeral will be at Hope Lutheran Church in Linden on Friday, June 7th with visitation from 10:00 am - noon and funeral service officiated by Pastor Paul Kollek starting at noon. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Linden, MI. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church.
