Virgilio Bonet M.D.

BONET, Virgilio M.D. - Age 89, of Flint Township, passed away May 29, 2021. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.  Those desiring may make contributions to Masses or the Alzheimer's Association.

Dr. Bonet was born June 29, 1931 in El Carmen, Norte de Santander, Colombia.  Upon arriving to the US from Colombia, he received his undergraduate degree from Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, MI in 1953.

He continued on to Medical School at the Universidad de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico.  Virgil returned to Michigan to complete his surgical residency at Hurley Hospital/University of Michigan in Flint.

He started private practice in Flint in 1965 providing surgical services at Hurley, McLaren and St Joseph Hospitals, eventually becoming the Chief of Surgery at McLaren Hospital.

Virgil was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  His proudest achievements surrounded his work in surgical education after becoming a Professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University in 1981, eventually managing the overall surgical residency program for McLaren Hospital  until his retirement in 2001 when he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus.

Virgil was an avid reader, loved golf, watching sports, playing cards with his buddies, swimming, his dog Roxy and enjoying the winter sunshine in Boynton Beach Florida with his wife Mary Katherine.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine; children, Brent Bonet, Lisa Bonet, Brian (Sandra) Bonet, Ramona (Jim) Kitching; grandchildren, Marcus, Maya, Javi, Marcela and Aja; siblings, Rafael, Celina, Esperanza and Maria Eugenia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugenio and Eudocia Bonet Solano; siblings, Daniel, Eugenio, Francisco, Alfonso, Emilce, Cemida, Alcira, Lucila and Luz Marina.  Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
