Vera A. McKAY

McKAY, Vera A. graduated from life and went to be with the Lord on May 10, 2010 at the age of 94, with her family close by. Born in Phelpston, Ontario, Canada on August 27, 1915 to Leslie S. and Flossie A.M. (Fraser) Cryderman. Vera was a vibrant, educated, intelligent woman, graduating from Flint Central in 1934 and Baker Business School of Comptometry, she was a keen businesswoman. A published author and personal editor, belonging to many writer's clubs including Detroit Romance Writer's Club and Durand Writer's Club. As a teenager she won an Edgar Guest Award for poetry. In her 30's, to support her children she graduated from Hurley's P.N. Program, went on to pursue her R.N. and at age 67 graduated with her B.S. degree after retirement. Vera worked at several area hospitals, including her last position with the Genesee County Health Department for a total of 25 years in nursing. Vera and her beloved late husband, Arthur B. McKay ran several uniform stores both in this area and Florida. One thing could always be said about her, "she was always dressed to the nines", everything matched and her seafoam Irish green eyes always shining. She leaves to mourn her passing, daughters, Gloria Owen and Connie Dennis; stepsons, Tom McKay (Jennifer) and Bob McKay (Joy); grandchildren, Andrew Hobson (Holly), Mark Monaghan (Carmen), Christine Monaghan, Jennifer Herstenberg (Paul); step-grandchildren, Jeffrey Kirkland, Elizabeth Batsios (Jim), Brian McKay (Danielle) Amy Fechter (Chris); great-grandchildren, Brandy Hobson, Owen and Lola Herstenberg, Patrick and Meghan Monaghan; step-great-grandchildren, Joslyn Kirkland, Alex, Ian and Eleni Batsios, Reagan Fechter; brother, Larry Cryderman; also 5 nieces; 10 nephews and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Lorne Cryderman; sister, Clara Cryderman; sisters-in-law, Mary Ella and Gwen Cryderman, Sabra Bayliss; nephews, Christopher and Jason Cryderman. The family would like to thank the staffs on the 9th, 6th and 12th floors of McLaren Hospital, Sandra and Vivian Sayre for their care of Vera. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Fenton Road Baptist Church or American Diabetes Association. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15 at Fenton Road Baptist Church, G-4386 Fenton Rd., Flint with Pastor Michael Stallard officiating. The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the church. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Grand Blanc Twp.
