Velda Newberry

NEWBERRY, Velda Jean (North) - Age 89, of Flint, passed away, Friday, December 6, 2019. In accordance with Velda's wishes cremation has taken place. Graveside service will take place 2 PM, Monday, December 16, 2019, at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Flint. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Velda was born on December 13, 1929, in Beech Grove, AR, the daughter of Jasper and Inez (Cooper) North. She and her family moved from Beech Grove, AR in 1943 to Flint. Velda was united in marriage to Hubert Odell Newberry on December 31, 1949, in Flint. She would stay home to raise their son Gary. Velda worked for a short time for the Flint Schools as an Instructor Assistant following her husband's death. She was active in the Church of God, serving as the Sunday School Secretary and a valued member of the church choir. In her free time, she enjoyed  gardening and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her brother, Clinton North; two sisters, Bernita Henson and Nina Sneller; cousin, Betty Mitchell; brother-in-law, Bill Ward; several nieces and nephews; and former daughter-in-law, Jodi Hornbeck.

Velda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Odell; beloved son, Gary; parents, Jasper and Inez North; and two sisters, Gay North and Virginia Ward; sister-in-law, Constance North; and brother's-in-law, Roy Henson and Jack Sneller.
