Val Chappell

April 16, 1955 — November 3, 2021

Gainsville Virginia

CHAPPELL, Val I. of Gainesville, Virginia went home to be with his Heavenly Father, with his wife by his side, on Wednesday November 3, 2021 at Fair Oaks Community Hospital, in Fairfax, Virginia. His passion was his family, loving the Lord, preaching the Word, and serving others. Val was born in Flint, Michigan on April 16, 1955, the son of Kenneth and (Thelma) LaNell Chappell. During his childhood and young adult life he resided in Clio, Michigan and graduated from Cilo High School in 1973. He furthered his education at Central Michigan University receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and at Dallas Theological Seminary receiving a Masters Degree in Theology. On May 30, 1981, Val married the love of his life, Tina (Charles) Chappell. They built a wonderful and fulfilling life together and welcomed with great joy three sons, Kendon, Blake, and Clayton, and a daughter, Paige, into their family. Val accepted the Good News of the Gospel at a young age and although he worked as a counselor at Child and Family Services of Saginaw, Michigan for a few years, the majority of his years were spent as a minister of the Gospel in the Lord’s church. He first served as a Youth Pastor at Eastside Unity/Cornerstone Baptist Church, Swartz Creek, Michigan. It was at this time that he answered God’s call into the ministry. While in seminary he served at Highland Baptist, Carrollton, Texas as youth pastor and worship leader. After completing his theological studies, he served as Singles Pastor at South Baptist Church of Lansing, Michigan for thirteen years. His next pastoral role was at Meadow Creek Church in Dallas, Texas. Val completed his life’s work shepherding his flock for eighteen years as Pastor of Community Bible Church in Manassas, Virginia. Val also enjoyed the experience of sharing the Gospel on several mission trips to Australia, Trinidad, South Africa, and Guatemala. He leaves here to cherish his memory his wife, Tina (Charles) Chappell of Gainesville, Virginia, his son Kendon Chappell and wife Lauren of Warrenton, Virginia, his son Blake Chappell and wife Jocelyn of Muskegon, Michigan, his son Clayton Chappell of Gainesville, Virginia and his daughter Paige Kettell and husband Spencer of Gainesville, Virginia. His three beloved grandchildren Audrey, Moira and William will sorely miss their PopPop. In addition, he leaves his mother (Thelma) LaNell Chappell of Lennon, Michigan and his sister (Phyllis) LaRae Wing and her husband Michael of Lennon Michigan. Also missing him will be many other cherished family members, beloved church family members, and a multitude of dear friends. Preceding him in death were his father, Kenneth Chappell, father-in-law, Lloyd Charles, mother-in-law, Norma Bundschuh, his grandparents, and several uncles and aunts. Funeral services will be held at 12 PM Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 6273 Miller Road Swartz Creek, Michigan 48473. Visitation will be held at the church Saturday from 11 AM until the time of the service. There will be a celebration of life service in Virginia hosted by Community Bible Church at a later date.
