Thomas J. Myers, age 90, of Gaines, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Tom was born in Flint, Michigan on June 30, 1933 to Carlton & Helen Myers. He graduated from Gaines High School in 1951. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in the military police from 1952-1955. Tom also served on the Durand Police Department and as a sheriff’s deputy in Shiawassee County before joining plant security at the General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Flint. He retired from GM after 28 years.
Tom was a Mason most of his adult life. He was a member of the North Newburg Lodge 161 Free & Accepted Masons in Durand for more than 60 years. Tom was also a member of Durand Commandery 21 Knights Templar, Durand Chapter 139 Royal Arch Masons and Durand Council 38 Royal & Select Masons, as well as many other Masonic affiliations. In 2018 Tom was the recipient of the prestigious Knight Templar Cross of Honor. This was his most proud moment as a Mason.
In his younger years Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers, working in his vegetable garden and volunteering as a reading tutor at Doyle Knight Elementary School in Lennon.
Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Janet; his four children, JoAnn (Mark) Gray, Kevin (Nancy) Myers, Nan Myers, and Anjie Klier; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Albert Myers and Jack (Karon) Myers, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Danielle Gooch; brother, Floyd Myers; and sister Lavonne Smith.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on March 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Swartz Creek Mason Lodge, 7449 Miller Rd, Swartz Creek MI. The family will greet guests beginning at 1 p.m. There will be a private inurnment at St. Joseph Cemetery in Gaines at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation.
