Thomas “Tom” William Cameron, 82, of Flint, Michigan died Monday July 29, 2024.

Funeral services will be held 3 PM Saturday August 3, 2024 at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd, Grand Blanc. Visitation will be held 11 AM until the time of the funeral at 3 PM on Saturday August 3, 2024. Interment 10:30 AM Wednesday August 7, 2024 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.

Tom was born on March 25, 1942 in Bay City, Michigan into the large Irish Catholic family created by Raymond and Mary (Sinclair) Cameron.

Many knew Tom as a towering 6’4” man of few words, toking cigars with a gruff voice and intimidating exterior. Most also knew that this exterior was just a facade and his heart would melt for those who were more vulnerable, especially children and animals. Some would even say Tom should have gotten paid residuals from the movie Gran Torino as it was obvious that the Clint Eastwood character had to have been inspired by him.

Tom developed a passion for golfing at a young age when he caddied at the Bay County Country Club with his brother, Brian. He and Brian continued to enjoy playing golf together throughout their lives. Tom played in 2 golf leagues every summer. Tom also shared his love for golf with his children, two of whom also picked up the sport.

In the 1960s, Tom served in the Army branch of the military. He often spoke fondly of his time there, the camaraderie, and his achievement of becoming a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne division out of Fort Bragg.

After his time in the military, Tom met and married Janice Kerkau. They moved to Flint where Tom took a job at General Motors. He worked for the company for more than 40 years. Tom and Jan raised 3 children in Flint: Shelley, Steven, and Sarah.

Thomas is survived by his children, daughter Shelley Cameron Schwartz of Indianapolis, son Steven Cameron of Flint, and daughter Sarah Cameron of Boyne City; five grandchildren Samuel Schwartz, Lauren Schwartz, Asher Schwartz, Rachel Schwartz, and Yitzy Schwartz of Indianapolis; four siblings, Robert (Katherine) Cameron, Brian Cameron, Janilee Rinz, and Elaine Kochany; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by wife Janice (Kerkau) Cameron, brother James Cameron, sister Ellen Cameron Hadd, brother Hugh Cameron, and son in law Drew Schwartz.
