McKellar, Thelma Louise, Age 96, of Grand Blanc, died October 31, 2021. Funeral services will be held 11AM Friday November 5 at First Presbyterian Church of Flint, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint. The Rev. Paul Ytterock will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 PM Thursday at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Grand Blanc and from 10 AM Friday until the time of service at the church. Those desiring may make contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Flint. Thelma was born October 23, 1925 in Flint, the daughter of Harrison and Lona (Murray) DeMott. She was married to John David McKellar on August 21, 1948 in Flint. Thelma graduated from Central High School in Flint and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central Michigan University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University, with additional post-graduate certification in Guidance and Counseling from Oakland University. She taught at the Flint Community Schools from 1948 to 1988 - as part-time substitute and reading specialist while her children were young, and then full-time first grade teacher until retirement. She was awarded Teacher of the Year and an annual Reading Award was named in her honor. Thelma was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Flint, where she served in a variety of roles including Deacon, Elder and Trustee. She was long active in the Junior League of Flint and held Board positions in many community organizations over the years. She was a long-time member of the Mu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma professional society and P.E.O. organization where she enjoyed the good works, friendship, and support of her sisters in education. Thelma especially enjoyed retirement summers at the family’s northern Michigan cottage in Bellaire. She will be remembered as a loving wife, wonderful, kind and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by children John David (Kristin) McKellar, Jr. of Grand Blanc, Andrew DeMott McKellar of Charlevoix, and Martha Murray (Patrick) Gilmore of Grand Blanc; grandchildren, Matthew (Veronica) McKellar, J. Patrick (Jamie) McKellar, Arthur McKellar, Andrea (Ryan) Loveless, Suzanne (Steven) DesJardins, Sarah (Landon) Gilmore; great-grandchildren, Jake, Brock, J. Christian, Lily, Austin, and Makenna. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents Harrison and Lona DeMott, husband J. David McKellar, siblings Neoma Colpitts, Juanita Vogelsburg, Pauline Ballou, and James DeMott.
