DEAN, Thelma Irene - age 98, of Fenton, died peacefully Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Rockwell Assisted Living with family at her side. Services will be held 11AM Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton with Pastor Chuck Hubbert officiating. Interment will be held at Smith Hill Cemetery in Otisville. Visitation will be 6-8PM Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Wednesday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Fenton Free Methodist Church. Mrs. Dean was born June 16, 1911 in Flint, the daughter of the late Harry E. and Maggie (Williams) Smith. Thelma was employed as an LPN at the state home in Lapeer, retiring in 1970. She enjoyed knitting and Jigsaw Puzzles. Thelma was like a "grandma" to her many great and great-great nieces and nephews. The family looked forward to her gifts of cozy, hand-knit slippers and also appreciated her delicious home-made mashed potatoes, rolls and apple pies at family gatherings. Her sparkly smile, quick wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family. Surviving are: daughter-in-law, Oanh Dean of MN; 3 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-granddaughter; sister Leona Smith of Fenton; nephews Doug Smith of Brazil, Ken (Dianna) Smith of Bath, Don (Marcia) Smith of Trenton; nieces Kathy (John) Wever of Fenton, Beth Smith of Spring Arbor; many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert on April 8, 1958; step-son, Harold Dean; sister, Dortha Smith; and brother, Victor (Eva) Smith.
