S.R. Pillay

PILLAY, S.R. (Nanda Pillay) - Age 75, of Flint, passed away at his home on July 27, 2017. Funeral services will be held 1PM Monday July 31 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Visitation will be 11 AM Monday until time of service at the funeral home. Mr. Pillay was born on November 16 1942 to Rajagopal Naga Pillay (R.N. Pillay) and Gynamabal(Yanna) Pillay at their home on Lyell Street in Ladysmith, South Africa. Mr. Pillay completed his secondary education at Windsor High School in Ladysmith. He attended the University of South Africa graduating with his bachelor of arts degree in English and Private Law in 1966. He completed his law degree at the University of South Africa and was admitted to practice as an attorney by the Supreme Court of South Africa in 1975. He rose to prominence as an attorney in Durban during the 1980's. He considered it to his great fortune to have had the chance to have spend two years in India before coming to the United States. He enjoyed learning. He emphasized the importance of reading good literature and wrote beautifully. His other great passion was gardening. This was something he shared with his mother, whom he lost at a very young age. He took his greatest joy from spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, Noah Rajagopal Pillay, Luke Nandan Pillay, Grace Yanna Smiley, and Devin Nandan Smiley. He is survived by his son, Yumeshan Pillay and Brenda Pillay, his daughter Drs. Natasha Smiley and Matthew Smiley and by his sister, Thunga Nadesen. He was proceeded in death by his brothers Kitcha Pillay and Peatha Pillay and by his sister Mama Govender. He also leaves behind many nephews and nieces. Even though he had not seen many of them for many years, he spoke of them often and fondly. His kindness to all those he met will not be forgotten.
