Sarah Emma SMEJA

SMEJA, Sarah E. - age 85, of Swartz Creek, passed away June 25, 2011. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Friday, July 1, 2011 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek with Pastor Barbara Benjamin officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. Visitation will be held 1-3 and 5-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Sarah Emma Smeja was born November 20, 1926 to John and Emma (Skula) Fabry in Durand, MI. Sarah had resided in Swartz Creek for many years and spent the last 23 years in Plant City, FL. Sarah Fabry married Alfred Smeja on August 2, 1947 in Swartz Creek. Sarah graduated form Durand High School in 1945 and attended Lansing Business University, Baker University, worked at Simplicity Engineering in Durand, worked for Judge Bobier at the Federal Bankruptcy Court and was a Legal secretary for the Krophol Law Offices. Sarah work with Swartz Creek Schools PTA program, was a member of United Methodist Church of Swartz Creek and Plant City., FL. Sarah and her husband were members of the Friendship Club in Swartz Creek, Al and Sarah formed and directed a Czechoslovakian chorus and band called the Friendship Club Czech Singers. They performed at several local and out of state festivities for several years. Sarah was inducted into the "state of Michigan Polka Hall of Fame" at Owosso, MI October 1, 1995. He husband Alfred Smeja had been inducted into the Hall of Fame October 8, 1978. Alfred and Sarah retired and moved to Plant City, FL in 1987, he husband Alfred passed away May 3, 1997. Survived by 3 children, Jerry (Dorothy) Smeja of Flint, MI, Pamela (Paul) Michitsch of Englewood, CO, and Ronald (Gina) Smeja of Kansas City, MO; four grandsons, 2 granddaughters; 2 great-grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter. Sisters, Irene VanDeSande of Bancroft, MI and Marie (Cliff) Semple of Durand, MI. Preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Annie Krull of Owosso.
