He was a veteran of the Korean War serving honorably in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Antietam (CV/CVA/CVS-36). He married Norma Jean Welshons April 7, 1962 in Livonia and they resided in Fenton since 1970. Sam was a proud member of the Teamsters Union and hauled American-made cars all over Michigan and Ohio, retiring from Complete Auto Transit after thirty-two years of lauded service. Sam dearly loved his wife and family, his country, his home, and everything having to do with trains. He could be seen sitting on the porch he built, dog on his lap, drinking black coffee, looking over the acreage he maintained up to the week he died. He was a hard-working man who never refused a request for help, but rarely accepted any. He enriched the lives of all of his grandchildren, camping with them each summer at Walden Woods, creating memories that will last a lifetime. He showed his support at their many school and sporting events and was a true all-American grandpa. He and Jean visited all fifty states and celebrated their 50th anniversary surrounded by the legacy of love and caring they created together. Sam was loved by all who knew him, the truest measure of a man. He will be deeply missed. Surviving are: his wife of 52 years, Norma "Jean"; daughter Shari and her husband Anthony Ellis of Flushing, and son David Mikesell of Onsted; 7 beloved grandchildren, Alaina, Logan, Karynn, Serena, Keegan, Mia, and Grayson, as well as several nieces, nephews, and countless cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Juanita North and Ruth Hurt; and 2 brothers, Bob and Walter Mikesell.
