Russell Husted

July 24, 1942 — April 14, 2021

On Wednesday April 14, 2021 the world lost a great man, Russell Husted. Russ was born in Flint, Mi. on July 24, 1942, the only child of Fern Borgert Husted and Wayne Husted. He lived his entire life in the Flint and Grand Blanc areas with the exception of his college years spent in Johnson City, TN. Russ graduated from Atherton High School in 1960. He then attended Flint Community Jr. College where he met and pursued his future wife, Sharon Wagner. After almost 5 years of dating, he had the best day of his life when he married Sharon and then the second best day of his life was the day his son, Russell II, was born. Russ's path followed a 35 year long successful career in teaching first at Longfellow Jr. High and then in the Mt. Morris school system until retirement in 2005. Following his teaching and coaching tenure in Mt. Morris, he went on to coach at Powers Catholic High School. Russ was an accomplished athlete. In high school he excelled in basketball, football, and track being a state champion high hurdler, but he is best known for his feats in weightlifting being a world record holder for a 555 lb. "raw" drug free bench press as well as holding records for the lift in 5 different weight classes. Russ took his expertise to the classroom where he developed and instituted a weightlifting program to benefit all school sports, providing strength and confidence to all who participated including his "Husted Power Pack" which took home numerous local, state and national trophies. He later published his knowledge through his "Way to Win" program in a series of books. In
addition to his athletic prowess, Russ developed interests and expertise in home design and building, landscape and cooking. After graduating from Flint Jr. College and East Tennessee State University, Russ completed a Masters program at C.M.U. followed by post graduate classes at C.M.U., E.M.U., and  M.S.U. He ended his academic career just 9 credit hours and a thesis short of a PhD. Russ is survived by his wife and partner of almost 60 years, Sharon; son, Russell II and wife, Heidi; 2 special grandchildren, Hunter Charles, and Taelor Mae; and a most loved Old English Sheepdog, Jillie Mack. He is also survived by a host of former students, many of whom he has remained in contact with, close friends, Barb and John Zintsmaster, Janet and Herman Finsterwald, Connie McAleer, Judy and Bert Foster, Dale and Deb Badgley, Deb and Mike Casey, Kay and Doug Casey, Bill Metcalfe, Nancy Metcalfe and family, Dr. Inderjit Bhatti and staff, Rick Vasburgh; wonderful neighbors, Reverend and Mrs. Robert Henson and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Manning; Sharon's card club, Beth, Paula, and Marianne; owners and staff at "Luigi's", his favorite restaurant since 1961, Rob Hoberg, Kevin Bloss and many others nearby and across the country. Russ is pre-deceased by his grandmother, Bertha Borgert; mother, Fern Husted Fuller; stepfather and stepbrother, John Fuller Sr. and John Fuller Jr. respectively. As per Russ's wishes there will be no services. Charitable contributions of one's choice may be made in his memory. Russ's passing has created a great void in all our lives. Arrangements provided by Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center 6063 Fenton Rd. Grand Blanc. Tributes may be shared on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
