PIPER, Robert S. - Philosophers ask, "What is the meaning of life?" We are born, we live, and we die. Bob Piper knew this question and with his life answered it. And what a life it was! Husband, father, grandfather, artist, gardener, businessman and founder of Jellybean Day. He grew up on the East Side of Flint and graduated from Flint Central. His high school years could be described as peripatetic. It was more than a philosophy. It was to be his life. He was always moving, always searching for new ideas, new things and new people. He was a social person who loved to be around good friends. In high school, he met the love of his life, Judy Weckler, who grew up in Grosse Pointe and also spent summers at Lake Fenton. They were married shortly after graduating from college, he from the University of Colorado and she from Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Bob earned an MBA from American University in Washington DC, and they decided to live in Flint. He chose to enter the family business as its third-generation leader and successfully transformed it during changing times. Bob had many loves in his life. First and foremost was his late-wife Judy, his two children, Martha, Mark, his daughter-in-law Kate and two grandchildren, Max and Sara. He loved beauty and that developed into a lifelong relationship with the Flint Institute of Arts where he served as an active volunteer and patron. Bob volunteered at the Flint Art Fair every year since its inception. He loved Lake Fenton and life on the Lake. He also loved growing things in his gardens, and that led to a long relationship with the Genesys Hospital where he worked as a volunteer at the greenhouse. So, Bob knew the meaning of life. His was a life of family, community, beauty and love. The family will host visitation from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Flint with a service to follow on Tuesday June 6, 2017. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Flint Institute of Arts or the College and Cultural Center Fund at the Flint Community Foundation.Arrangements by Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint.
