NELLIS, Robert E. - Age 82, of Byron, formerly of Swartz Creek, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at home. Funeral Services will be 1:30PM Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, Bob Giles officiating. Interment will follow at Flint Memorial Park, Mt. Morris. Military Honors will be rendered under the auspices of VFW Chevrolet Post #3087. Visitation will be 4-8PM Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Robert was born June 21, 1927 in Flint, the son of the late Byron and Elizabeth (Ross) Nellis. He was a graduate of Flint Northern High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. Robert married Mary Lewis November 21, 1947 in Flint and she preceded him in death on June 4, 2005. He was employed as a Captain for the Flint Fire Department, retiring in 1971 after 23 years of service. Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Gordon) Hoy of South Carolina; son, Daniel (Regina) Nellis of Byron; six grandchildren, Jerry, Michael and Kristen Hoy, Stephanie Jones, Kenneth and Angela Nellis; four great-grandchildren; brother, Leroy (Cathy) Nellis of Buckner, Missouri.
