Exelby, Robert J., age 78, of Davison, formerly of Lapeer, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous battle of cancer on Sunday, December 31, 2023. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Trinity Methodist Church, 1310 N. Main Street, Lapeer, Michigan 48446. Family will greet friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may direct contributions to Trinity Methodist church or Lapeer Community Schools Scholarship Fund.
Robert was born on January 1, 1945, in Detroit, MI, the son of Neal and Lena (Kazmerski) Exelby. Robert married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Alexander. Mr. Exelby graduated from Quincy High School in 1964. After high school, he went to Olivet College on a Football Scholarship and graduated in 1968 with a B.A. in Mathematics and Science. He earned one master's degree from Oakland University in Computer Science and a second Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Michigan State University. Robert taught Mathematics at Riverview Middle School for one semester. He retired after teaching Mathematics and Computer Science for over 30 years at Lapeer Community Schools. In addition to teaching, he was involved with the Lapeer County School Employees Credit Union. Robert was a member of Trinity Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served on many committees and taught Adult Sunday School. He was very passionate about his faith and beliefs. He also enjoyed car repair, woodworking, building computers, and gardening. Robert attended many of his grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities. He enjoyed traveling and boating with family.
Robert is survived by his loving wife: Elizabeth (Alexander) Exelby; daughter: Jody (Mark Sr.) Baldridge of Davison; grandchildren: McKenzie Jo and Mark Jr. Baldridge both of Davison; brother: LaVern (Judy) Exelby of Wetmore, Michigan; sister: Faith (Daniel) Aguilera of Redondo Beach, California; sister-in-law, Sandy Exelby of Coldwater, Michigan and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Norman; his sister, Kathlene Beougher.
