Richard James HOPKINS

HOPKINS, Richard James - age 77, of Thompsonville, MI, formerly of Swartz Creek, died Monday, September 14, 2009 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Services will be held 11 AM Monday, September 21, 2009 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek with Rev. Sarah LaRose-Nettel officiating. Interment will be held 1 PM Monday at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-9 PM Saturday and 2-5 and 7-9 PM Sunday at the funeral home. An O.E.S. Memorial Service will be held 7:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home followed by a Masonic Memorial Service. Mr. Hopkins was born July 21, 1932 in Flint, the son of Bennie and Vella Wilhelmina (Landon) Hopkins. He was a 1950 graduate of Northern High School and married Betty Retherford on September 1, 1956. Mr. Hopkins was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He retired from General Motors V8 in Skilled Trades and Machine Repair. Mr. Hopkins was a member of the Swartz Creek F & AM #458 where he served as Worshipful Master in 1978. He was also a member of the Benzie Area Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hopkins was a 32 degree and 33rd degree Mason. Surviving are: wife, Betty Hopkins; five children, Vickie (Douglas) Potter of Howell, Daren (Kimberly) Hopkins of Shallotte, NC, Scott Hopkins of Thompsonville, Mary Catherine (Victor) Burdick of Whittemore, Stacey (Scott) Huxley of Kingsley, MI; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way.
