PAPES, Rev. Fr. Joseph T. -- Age 81, of Swartz Creek, died Thursday, October 26, 2006 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Monday, October 30 at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Swartz Creek. Rev. Fr. Rudy Papes Celebrant. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery, Swartz Creek. Visitation will be held 7-9 PM Saturday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Wake will be held 2-5 and 7-9 PM Sunday at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Swartz Creek with a rosary being prayed at 7:30 PM Sunday. Joseph was born August 4, 1925 in Swartz Creek the son of Stephen F. and Anna (Stefik) Papes. He was a graduate of Mary Crapo High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in WWII. He attended St. Jerome's College in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. He did his theology studies at Regina Cleri Seminary in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was ordained into the priesthood June 6, 1959 for the Diocese of Great Falls, Montana where he served in parishes as assistant and pastor. Upon returning to Michigan, Fr. Papes assisted at St. Mary's, Mt. Morris, and he served as the Chaplain at Marian Hall for several years. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Survivng are: brothers, Rev. Rudy Papes of Grand Rapids, Bernard Papes and Paul Papes, both of Swartz Creek, Steve Papes and wife Betty of Flint; nieces and nephews, Gloria and Phil Wiley, Mike and Renee Papes, Carl Papes, Brenda and Rick Hunsinger; great nieces, Sarah and Michelle Papes, Subrina and Oliva Hunsinger.
