Phyllis Jean Evanoff

November 3, 1924 — January 12, 2004

EVANOFF, Phyllis Jean  Age 79, of Flint, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at Hurley Medical Center. Services will be held 11 AM Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Dr. Lawrence Kent officiating. The family will receive friends 4-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Cecilia Society. Mrs. Evanoff was born November 3, 1924 in Flint, the daughter of Leo and Juanita (Hodges) Gorbutt and lived in Flint her entire life. She married Dr. Stephen A. Evanoff on August 24, 1946 in Flint. Mrs. Evanoff was a 1942 graduate of Flint Central High School. She attended Flint Junior College and received a Bachelors Degree in Education from University of Michigan. She received a Masters Degree in Education from Drake University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Flint, the Flint Golf Club, St. Cecilia Society, the Farm and Garden Club, Needle Work Guild, Sierra Club, the Wilderness Society, Flint Environmental Action Team, past Board Member of the Flint Library. She was a volunteer tutor at Martin School. Mrs. Evanoff was a founding member of University of Michigan Family Camp at Walloon Lake. She was interested in environmental legislation and was involved in the passing of the Environmental Act through the U.S. Congress during the Johnson Administration. Mrs. Evanoff and her husband traveled on multiple wilderness trips and were very active with backpacking and wilderness activities. She was an avid golfer and tennis player. Surviving are: husband, Dr. Stephen A. Evanoff; three daughters, Stephanie and husband, William Fohey of Fenton, Barbara and husband, Andrew Martinez of Ohio, Mary Ann and husband, Joseph Gisewhite of Flint; son, John Evanoff and Patricia Gidday of Nevada; five grandchildren, William Fohey II, Stephen Fohey, Leighanne Potter of Suttons Bay, Zoe Gisewhite, Jessica Gidday; great-granddaughter, Abigail Stroh; brother-in-law, Frank Evanoff and Iola Werkheiser of Flint; sister-in-law, Genevieve Evanoff of East Lansing; niece, Connie and husband, David Knaggs of East Lansing, nephew, Michael B. Evanoff and wife, Ani of Chicago, IL; three cousins, Walter and wife, Deborah Hodges of Belleville, WA, Robert and wife, Marilyn Thorn of Livonia, Ret. General Thomas and wife, Penny Ryan of Glenville, GA. She was preceded in death by: daughter, Jo Ann Evanoff in 1972.
