Phillip Gilmer

GILMER, PHILLIP ARNOLD of Flint, Michigan, age 85, died peacefully on November 25, 2019 surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. Phil’s family would like to express gratitude to the Ascension Genesys Hospital staff for the compassionate care he received there. A memorial service will take place at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Road on Saturday, November 30 at 11:00 am, with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 am.

Phil was born September 13, 1934 in Dickson, Tennessee, the son of Thomas Martin Gilmer and Hessie Mae Arnold. With his family he moved to Michigan to work in the auto industry. Phil eventually settled in Flint where he met and married Louise May Miller in 1953. At the age of 20, Phil started working at Chevrolet Assembly and would continue working at GM over the course of the next 33 years. A proud member of the UAW, Phil worked hard to provide for his family before retiring from GM in 1987.

As a young man, Phil was a talented athlete and an excellent bowler. He enjoyed many activities including camping, fishing, playing guitar and singing, chess, golf, word games, cooking, watching sports and politics, dancing, and spending time with his family. He was a DIY man before the term was invented and taught himself many useful skills. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Louise, and they shared an inspiring companionship and affection over 65 years of marriage.

Phil is survived by his wife Louise, sister Margaret VanWalleghem, brother Michael Wiser, son Philip (Winnie) Gilmer, son Boak (Debbie) Gilmer, daughter Toni Perrine, daughter Gale Goldman, daughter Kelly (Vern) Freer and son Paul (Cindy) Gilmer, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
