Paul Golden

GOLDEN, Paul R. (Stymie) - Age 84, of Fenton, MI and Augusta, ME, husband of Eleanor H. Golden, died peacefully of natural causes after having dinner with his wife on May 7, 2017. He was born June 5, 1932, in Augusta, the son of Thomas A. and Amanda C. (Brunelle) Golden. He is survived by his wife, four children, two brothers, and six grandchildren. Paul was the youngest of nine children; five brothers, Forrest, Robert, Walter, Ray, and Thomas, and three sisters, Jeannette, Mary and Doris. He was raised in Augusta, where he attended St. Mary's (now St. Michael's) schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1951. Throughout his life, he fondly remembered his youth in the Augusta area, especially dances on Island Park on Cobbossee Lake. At the wedding of his friend John MacDonald, he met Eleanor Hebert of Portland and Fayette, sister of the bride Leah. Paul and Eleanor were married in 1960. They built a house in Manchester and raised four children - Cathy, Jim, Anne and Beth. He was a devoted father who faithfully attended school activities and spent a great deal of time with his children. As a family, they enjoyed many outdoor activities including boating and cross-country skiing. Together with the families of some of his closest friends, they made memorable camping trips to remote places in Maine including islands on Moosehead Lake and Androscoggin Lake. After early jobs working at Western View Golf Course in Augusta, Paul had a 37-year career with the Maine Department of Transportation -- first as a civil engineering technician, and later as a project manager. He made many life-long friends while at the MDOT and often shared stories of the work he and others accomplished-- building and maintaining roads all over Maine. Paul was a proud 65-year member of the Augusta Elks Club. In his free time, he was an avid reader and loved visiting the Lithgow Library in Augusta. He enjoyed playing golf (two holes-in-one!) and going on hunting and fishing adventures with life-long friends. We will truly and dearly miss him.
