Opal was born December 30, 1928 in Iuka, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Samuel and Eunice (Brown) Johnson. Opal married the love of her life Ben F. Furtick on August 20, 1947 in Booneville, Mississippi. Throughout her life, Opal loved her Lord and her family. She was the pianist at Thrasher Baptist Church in Mississippi until she and Ben moved to Flint, Michigan in 1969. Prior to moving to Flint, Opal worked at Prentiss Manufacturing Shirt Company in Booneville, Mississippi. After moving to Flint, she and Ben become members of Eastgate Baptist Church in Burton, Michigan. In 1970, Opal became a salesperson for Winkleman's Clothing Store, where she later became the manager. Her three grandchildren were the light of her life. When they were toddlers, she would pick them up on Sunday mornings and take them to church with her.
For many years, she and her Eastgate friends visited nursing homes in Grand Blanc, singing hymns and having a time of worship with the residents. Afterward, they would select a restaurant for lunch. Mom always ordered her favorite - blueberry pancakes. She was blessed with many wonderful friends and memories in Mississippi and Michigan.
