Monica was born on January 1, 1945 in Flint, MI, the daughter of Hovey (Norwood) and Rita Crawford (Chartrand) . She married Walter Wood in Mt. Morris, MI on February 21, 1961. Monica was a loving mother of five children who were her greatest joys in life. She owned and operated her own day care business for 25 years, and was thought of fondly by her "2nd children" and their parents for the extra tender loving care and security she incorporated into their lives. Parents praised her ability and willingness to go the extra mile in loving, teaching and taking care of their children. Monica also worked for Swartz Creek Community Schools as a custodian and teacher's assistant. She worked at Swartz Creek McDonald's for several years, using her superb cleaning and organizational skills to keep the lobby sparkling clean and efficiently run. Anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Monica has called her "one of the sweetest ladies ever!" She was a great listener, compassionate and empathetic (and also known as fiercely stubborn and feisty!) and more than anything just wanted to make others happy. She participated in several 5K and 10K walk races over the years and formed many dear friendships along the way. Monica had a gift for decorating and created a beautiful and very comfortable home. She also enjoyed tending to her flowers, reading, bowling and jigsaw puzzles. Last but not least her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life-She loved and enjoyed being with them "to the moon and back!"
Surviving are: Sons, Matt (Sandy) Wood of Hartland, MI, Timothy (Lisa) Wood of Gaines, MI, David (Deana) Wood of Abingdon, VA, and daughter Renee (Scot) Wykes of Swartz Creek, MI. She was a wonderful, deeply loved grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sisters Terri (Jim) Hynes, Angela (Tyler) Tyson, and Mary Ann Christiansen. Preceded in death by her husband, Walter (Al) Wood, son, Brian Wood, sister Jeanine Kelly and parents Hovey (Norwood) and Rita Crawford.
Very special thanks to our wonderful, giving sister-in-law Deana, who moved in with mom temporarily to be her main caretaker. Many thanks to cousin and former nurse Harvetta, who guided us with her knowledge, great expertise, and angel like care whenever we needed her. We extend our grateful thanks to Andrew, McLaren Hospice nurse, who, with his gentle loving care, expertise and wonderful sense of humor, helped us navigate the palliative hospice care journey. Last but certainly not least, thank you to cousin Brian, Aunt Jo, Aunt Terri and others who called, helped, visited and wrote Monica. We couldn't have done it without all of you!
