Mollie Hembruch

October 14, 1935 — November 17, 2019

Mollie Jane Lauck was born on October 14, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, the third and youngest child of Carl H. Lauck and Doris L. Haddox Lauck. She was raised in Findlay, Ohio, graduating from Findlay High School in 1954. She found a community of love and support among family and friends at the East Foulke Avenue Church of God.  She remembered fondly youth group events in her cousin Louie Lauck’s home that included activities like pulling taffy, and during which she became acquainted with her future husband Gus. Mollie and Gus were married on August 4, 1957.  In 1964, the couple made a new home in Flint, Michigan, where Gus had taken a job at Chevrolet V-8 Engine.   Together, they raised three children, John, Margaret, and William.  Mollie was a faithful Christian whose children remember her regular habit of daily scripture reading and prayer.  For most of her time in Flint, she was active at the West Court Street Church of God, serving as a Sunday school teacher, tutor, and director of the Vacation Bible School program for many years. Mollie was recognized for her organizational ability as far back as high-school “commercial club.” Her occupational experiences included sales and book keeping at F.W. Woolworth Co. in Findlay, working as a bank teller at Genesee Bank in Flint, and serving with the Charter Township of Flint as a clerk in the treasury department and election precinct chairman at polls. Later, Mollie worked as a paraprofessional through the Mott Adult High School, taught English as a second language through the International Institute, and was instrumental in establishing a labor union for teacher’s aides in the Flint Schools.  As coordinator for the Volunteers for Adult Literacy, the program was focused, grant dollars realized, and hundreds of volunteer tutors trained and placed to assist Flint area residents in need of basic literacy skills and support. Mollie passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2019, surrounded by her children John (with Therese) of Edwardsville, IL; Margie (with Roger) of Holland, MI; and William (with Leslie) of Swartz Creek, MI.  She leaves behind six grandchildren: Ben (with Jocelyn) Hembruch, Emily Hembruch-Hart (with Tyler), Randy Wade (with Rian Mae), Danny Wade, Steffen Hembruch, and Ethan Hembruch; and one great-grandson Emmett Charles “Charlie” Hart. Other relatives include a brother-in-law Art (with Liz), a sister-in-law Elsie, and 22 nieces and nephews with their families. A meticulous housekeeper and gracious hostess, Mollie hosted events for children, grandchildren, and their friends, to the very end of her life. Visitation with the family is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A Memorial Service follows at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. John Hembruch officiating.  A private committal service was held at Glenwood Cemetery.  The family requests memorials to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, “Literacy for Life Fund,” or McLaren Hospice and Homecare Foundation. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
