It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved mother, Miriam (“Mimi”) Sussman Schaffer died in the early morning hours of August 6, 2024 at the age of 88 at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan. Mimi was predeceased by her parents Julia and Herbert Sussman, her beloved husband, Dr Arnold Schaffer and their son Bruce Alan Schaffer. She leaves behind her daughters Susan (Ronald Gup) and Michelle (David Hemenway) and her son Robert (Laura) and her cherished grandchildren Maxwell, Georgie and Maizy Schaffer and Audrey Hemenway. Mimi grew up in the Bronx and obtained her undergraduate degree from City College of New York. She and her husband Arnold relocated as newlyweds to Flint where they raised their children, forged their paths professionally and enjoyed being active members of the Jewish community among many other local professional and service organizations. Mimi made the decision to fulfill an important mission to further her education and obtained a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Shortly thereafter, she formed a solo practice as a marriage and family therapist and helped people experience and process grief through counseling. She took great pride in offering help to her clients, particularly those confronting the pain of grief. She faced her health challenges with bravery and grace and her love and devotion to her family never wavered. Despite the profound sadness we feel, we take comfort in thinking about how she touched those around her throughout her life. As we remember Mimi, we celebrate a life well-lived. She had a great sense of humor, an infectious smile and a generous soul seen by many. She will be missed by all who knew her.
