Michael Shumaker

Shumaker, Michael Ronald - Age 73 , of Swartz Creek, died March 2, 2016 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, March 4 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Interment in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Flint. Visitation will be held 3-8 PM Thursday, 10-11 AM Friday. Those desiring may make contributions to the Swartz Creek Kiwanis to a scholarship in Mike's name or the Swartz Creek Historical Society. Michael was born May 27, 1942 in Swartz Creek the son of Clarence and Anna ( Davis) Shumaker. He had worked at the Swartz Creek Schools for 3 years as a math teacher at the middle school. He then served as the director of the DPW for Swartz Creek for nearly 30 years. Mike was very active and dedicated to civic activities. He served on the Swartz Creek Bicentennial Committee and was a member of the Historical Society. He served on the Swartz Creek City Council for 14 years and the Park Board. He was a proud active member of the Swartz Creek Kiwanis for 50 years. He and four others inaugurated the Veterans Memorial in Swartz Creek. He enjoyed the Bottle Club and Flint Arrowhead Pipe Club. Surviving are wife Sharon; 5 children, Michael (Sherrill) of Grand Blanc, Bethany (Andrew) Kachel of Grand Rapids, Steve of Swartz Creek, Pamela of Columbus, OH, Joanne Devore of Swartz Creek; seven grandchildren, Katie, Emily, Trevor, Allison, Abby, Lauren and Tyler; sister Ruth (Frank) York of Big Rapids; nieces Elizabeth and Ann.
