BURKLEY, Melvin Robert -- Age 76, of Flushing, passed away April 12, 2016, at McLaren, Flint. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Saturday, April 16 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Committal services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday April 19 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be held 2 - 8 PM Friday, 2 - 3 PM Saturday. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make contributions to the International Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Dr. Suite 206, N. Hollywood CA. 91607, or First Baptist Church of Flushing, 5105 N. McKinley Rd., Flushing, MI. 48433. Mel was born November 1, 1939 in Swartz Creek the son of Robert and Bertha (Hoelscher) Burkley. He graduated from Swartz Creek High School in 1957, then joined the U.S Navy for 3 years. He married Joyce Golden in 1968 in Stanton, MI. He was a Journeyman Electrician employed by C & W Electric, F.D. Hayes, Genesee Electric, Hatzell Electric and Action Electric, also working out of state on many jobs. He retired in 2001. He did volunteer work for many years at Gitche Gumee Bible Camp in Eagle River MI. Mel was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Flushing and had attended First Baptist of Flushing in recent years. One of his main hobbies was cutting wood and doing yard work on his 20 acres. He loved family and visiting his kids in Columbus, Ohio as often as he could. He was a helper to many and a good "fix it" guy. He was on bowling leagues for many years. He is survived by wife of 48 years, Joyce; son, David (Andrea) Burkley of Reynoldsburg Ohio; daughter, Deborah (Rod) Smith of Reynoldsburg Ohio; granddaughter, Leya; grandsons, Lucas and Burkley; sisters, Marge Wilmes of Denver, CO, Roberta Randall of Adrian, MI; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Carl and sister -in- law Martha; brothers-in-law, Ray Wilmes and Bill Randall. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the McLaren doctors and nursing staff over the past two and a half weeks for their excellent care and concern at the hospital and Chemo Clinic the last two and a half years for his treatment with Multiple Myeloma.
