CYPHER, McCurdy Raymond "Ray" - Age 89, of Fenton/St. Helen, died Friday, September 30, 2016. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton. Fr. Robert Copeland celebrant. Interment will be held 9:30 AM Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd., Holly. Visitation will be at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton Monday from 1-4 and 6-8 PM, where a vigil service will be held at 7 PM and at church Tuesday from 10 AM until the time of the Mass. Those desiring may make contributions to Wounded Warriors Project. Ray was born April 16, 1927 in Marwood, PA, the son of McCurdy Martin "Mac" and Pearl Viola (Knoch) Cypher. He married Marilyn Jean Reardon August 27, 1948 in Cabot, PA. Ray was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Slippery Rock State College and his Master's Degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Ray taught one year in Pennsylvania then came to Michigan in 1950 and spent 34 years at the Atherton Community Schools; four years as a Teacher; eight years as a Principal; and twenty two years as Superintendent of Schools. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He also was a founding and life member of the Burton V.F.W. Post #2777 and life member and past Commander and Chaplin of St. Helen American Legion Post #416. Ray loved hunting, fishing, and boating with his sons and their families. Surviving are: his wife of 68 years, Marilyn; sons, W. Daniel and wife Laura Cypher of Fenton and David and wife Jeri-Ann Cypher of Fenton; grandchildren, Owen and wife Stacy Cypher of Kansas City, MO, Josh Cypher of Reno, NV, Catharine Cypher of Washington D.C., Harrison Cypher of Fenton, Abby and husband Dan Allen of Oxford, and Lauren Zepeda of Fenton; great grandchildren, Layla, Jared, Cannon, and Carter; brother, Ben and wife Mary Lou Cypher of Saxnburg, PA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Cypher. Online condolences may be posted on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
