Maurice E. STRONG

June 22, 1931 — January 14, 2011

STRONG, Maurice E. "Morrie" - Age 79, of Gaines, died Friday, January 14, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Calvary Baptist Church, 10500 Grand Blanc Rd., Gaines. Pastor Louis Canaday will officiate. Burial will follow in Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-8 PM Monday, 12-8 PM Tuesday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to Calvary Baptist Church, 10500 Grand Blanc Road, Gaines, MI 48436. Maurice was born June 22, 1931 in Branch County, MI the son of Orno J. and Seba A. (Wilson) Strong. He was married to Maria L. Burmania on November 30, 1951 in Cutlerville, MI. Mr. Strong was drafted into the US Army in 1951, he served in the Korean War and worked in ordinance demolition. Maurice earned a BA from University of Michigan and an MS from Michigan State University. Mr. Strong was a teacher for the Swartz Creek School District, taught Vocational Science, served as Assistant Principal and Career Coordinator for the Central Office. He retired in 1995 after 39 1/2 years of service. He also farmed all of his life. In 2000, he began working construction for his own company, Strong Services. For the past 17 years he had worked at H&R Block in Durand. Mr. Strong was a resident of Gaines since 1960, he previously lived in Williamston and on a farm in Indiana for a year. He had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Gaines since 1987 and was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church of Durand from 1960-1987. Surviving are: wife, Maria; children, Marcia Strong, Elliott and Marie (Strong) Nelson, William "Bill" and Melody (Strong)(Pierce) Sweeney, Rodney "Rocky" and Mary (Strong) Fowler, Maurine (Strong) and Nathan "Nate" Aldrich, Marc and Linda Strong, Diana Strong; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Maurice "Ed" Strong, son-in-laws, a sister and three brothers. Tributes may be posted on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
