Matie was preceded in death by husband Maurice, parents Austin and Ada Van Stratt, and brothers Austin and John. She is survived by brother Wallace (Marilyn) of Holland and sister-in-law Gerry of Grand Haven. Matie was born on December 3, 1914 in Grand Haven where she would eventually meet Maurice in high school. They married in 1936 and moved to Lansing where Maurice taught at the School for the Blind. In 1943, they moved to Fenton and Maurice taught shop and math at Fenton High School for 23 years. Matie worked at Stiles Insurance for several years and then assisted her husband when he was Director of the Fenton Community Center from 1966 to 1973. Matie loved to play cards and games and was very competitive. She had many Bridge friends and played in multiple Bridge groups. She also enjoyed bowling, fishing and playing the organ, and never missed watching or listening to a Detroit Tiger baseball game. She was well known for her ability to crochet doilies and donated many to her church bazaar. As she slowed down a bit, Matie read many books and did crossword puzzles to keep busy. She will be greatly missed by her three children, Lewis (Miriam) Kieft of Ypsilanti; Mary (David) Lampshire, of Swartz Creek; Linda Wykes (friend, Charles Bucknam) of Fenton, 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
