Mary Nieuwenhuis

Mary Anne (Merrill) Nieuwenhuis --  Age 72, of Flint, died December 17, 2022.

Mary was born November 5, 1950 in Alma the daughter of John Arnold Merrill and Ruth (Hummon) Merrill. She was a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Central Michigan University, and Masters Degree in Choral Conducting from University of Denver. She married Bruce Nieuwenhuis in 1989.

Mrs. Nieuwenhuis was a Professor of Choral Music and Voice at Mott Community College for 25 years. Prior to teaching at Mott College, she taught at Carman Elementary & Flushing Jr. High, and various staff positions at Interlochen Arts Camp, formerly National Music Camp. She served as the Music Director for Carolyn Mawby Chorale, New Century Chorale, and the Flint Male Chorus. She was also the Vocal Music Director for various Clio Cast & Crew productions, The New Vic Supper Theatre, Flint Community Players, and the Gilbert & Sullivan Players. She was a lifelong educator and director with a reputation for excellence.

Survived by husband of 33 years, Bruce Nieuwenhuis; step-son Dirk (Mary Procopio) Nieuwenhuis of Flint; step-daughter Kristin Nieuwenhuis of NYC; sister Elizabeth (John) Bert of Interlochen; 5 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grand children. She was preceded in death by mother Ruth Hummon Merrill; brother John William Merrill; father John Arnold Merrill.

A Memorial Concert is being held at 4 PM Sunday February 12 at the First Presbyterian Church of Flint, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Mary Nieuwenhuis Memorial Music Scholarship at Mott Community College.  Donations to the music scholarship can be made in Mary's name through the Foundation for Mott Community College.
