COSTELLO, Mary Virginia --  97, of Flint, died Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Regency Grand Blanc. Respecting her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass is scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 4, at St. Pius X Church in Flint, officiated by Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Strouse. Inurnment follows in Old Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Children’s Miracle Network, Hurley Foundation, One Hurley Plaza, Flint, MI. 48503, or to a charity of choice. Arrangements provided by Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Mary Virginia was born in Flint on January 12, 1922 to James and Sarah (Smith) Costello. She graduated from St. Matthew High School in 1939 and attended Baker Business University. She hired in at Chevrolet National Parts Distribution in 1941, retiring in 1980 from General Motors Parts Division. She supported numerous charities, especially those benefiting children. A prolific knitter, she donated hundreds of hats, mittens, afghans and skeins of yarn during her lifetime. Her specialty was round baby blankets, a pattern she committed to memory. Family, friends and acquaintances knew her as a remarkably upbeat and generous individual. Surviving are her niece, Patricia Costello Hand (Jed); great-niece Laura Hand (Matthew McFadden); great-nephews Gregory Hand (Linda Liu) and Michael Hand (Kathryn Benz); and great-great nephews William, Thomas and Emmett Hand.She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Francis and James (infant); sisters Bernice and Catherine (infant); and sister-in-law Sarah Jane (Pierce) Costello.Mary Virginia’s family acknowledges with heartfelt appreciation the kindnesses of her many valued friends.
