POWERS, Margaret "Peggy" C. -- Age 81, of Linden, MI, formerly of Homewood, IL, and Watervliet, MI, died Saturday, August 18, 2007 at her residence. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Saturday, August 25 at St. Jude Episcopal Church, 106 E. Elizabeth St., Fenton, Rev. Josh Hoover officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Powers Memorial Scholarship at Watervliet High School, Watervliet, MI. Peggy was born in Saginaw, MI, the daughter of Clare and Elizabeth (Rennison) Powers. She graduated from Alma College in 1950, where she distinguished herself by serving as President of her sorority (Alpha Theta) and President of The Women's Senate. She was also the recipient of The Barlow Trophy for Outstanding Senior Student and was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. In addition, Peggy was one of the founding contributors to the Robin Foundation of Alma College. With a degree in Speech and a teaching certificate in hand, Peggy taught first in Muskegon and then in Saginaw while earning a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan, which she was awarded in 1956. In 1960, Peggy left Michigan for a teaching position at Homewood-Flossmoor Senior High School near Chicago, IL. Besides Speech, directing theatrical productions was a passion for Peggy, and she directed many of them. In 1969, Peggy took the next logical step in her career by accepting a position at Prairie State College near Chicago, where she taught Speech and directed theatrical productions until her retirement in 1985. An avid traveler, Peggy was proud of the fact that she had visited several countries in every continent in the world except Antarctica. Peggy is survived by loving nieces, Yvonne Buffa of Flint, Nancy (Anthony) Aurino of Burton, Vicki (Gary) Williamson of Linden; nephew, Gary Luplow of Fenton; several great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews; and many longtime friends; along with several relatives in England. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Nancy Lafferty of Orlando, FL and Dorothy Luplow Becker of Linden, MI; brothers-in-law, Glen Lafferty, Floyd Luplow and Don Becker; and great-nieces Candise Buffa and Julie Paine Burmeister.
