VanVolkenburg, Lola J., age 86 of Flint Twp., died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Brian's House in Davison. Mrs. VanVolkenburg was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on March 7, 1922. She was a Flint area resident for many years. She graduated from Flint Central High School. Although she never went on to college, she never stopped learning and was very well educated. Mrs. VanVolkenburg retired from Chevrolet Mfg. Division in 1981 afer 26 years of service. After retirement, she and her husband Bill moved to St. Helen were they lived for 23 years. She moved back to Flint to be near family after the death of her husband in 2007. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Corunna, the American Legion Auxillary and held offices in both the Retirees Club and TOPS in St. Helen. She loved to travel with her husband Bill traveling to almost all the states. Mrs. VanVolkenburg is survived by her 6 children; James Oost of Grayling, Judith Goldsmith of Burton, Jennifer Noltie and husband Terry of Lapeer, Cathy Stewart and husband Philip of Flint, Janene Skiba and husband Fred of St. Helen and Jerry VanVolkenburg and wife Brenda of Careleton. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and a sister, Sharon Mead of Flint. She was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the 'book' grandma. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Zachary Couch, brother William Worden and a son-in-law Gerald Chown. Funeral services will be 2:30 P.M., Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Sharp Funeral Home, Miller Rd. Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, Pastor Doug Levesque will officiate. Services will conclude at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 12 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. and Sunday from Noon to service time.
