BLAND, Leslie "Les" P. - age 70, of Fenton, died Sunday, June 18, 2017 at McLaren-Flint. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Friday, June 23, 2017 at The Freedom Center, 2473 W. Shiawassee Ave., with Pastor Jim Weigand officiating. Visitation will be held 1-4 and 6-9 PM Thursday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Due to the sudden nature of his death, contributions may be made to April Ahmad and Autumn Bland. Les was born May 13, 1947 in Greenville, IN, the son of Ernest and Iva Mae (Blake) Bland. Les grew up in Greenville, IN and graduate from New Albany High School in Indiana. He moved to the Fenton area in 1966. Les was the Director of Public Works for the City of Fenton retiring in 2011 after 41 years of service. He was extremely active in the Fenton Community. He was instrumental in getting the new Fenton Water Plant and D.P.W. garage built and was a past Councilman of the Fenton City Council. Most recently, Les was honored by the City of Fenton by having the D.P.W. building named after him. He was the past President of A.P.W.A., was named in the Top Ten D.P.W. Directors in the Nation, cofounder of the Michigan Public Service Institute, Past President of the Fenton Lions Club, several times, member of the Jaycees, active volunteer for the Fenton Freedom Festival fireworks and the Jinglefest. Les was a member of the Freedom Center and sang with the Worship Team. He also enjoyed golf and softball. Surviving are: four children, Daniel (Cinnamon) Bland of Arizona; April (Mian) Ahmad of Fenton, Autumn Bland of Flint and Andrew Bland of Fenton; four grandchildren, Payton, Noah, Alivia, and Adien; three siblings, James (Judy) Bland of Flint, Donald (Shirley) Bland of Flint and Dianna (Ed) Traster of Caro. He was preceded in death by: his parents; and four siblings, Virginia, Alberta, George, and Bonnie. Friends may share an online tribute on the obituary page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
