HOPKINS, LeRoy Lawrence, (known as Hop or Hoppy by many)passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Genesys Hospice Care Center, Goodrich. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00AM Monday, November 3, 2008 at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 6100 Richfield Rd., Flint with Rev. Harold Polk officiating. LeRoy was born March 19, 1921 in Flint, the son of John and Lydia Hopkins. He married the love of his life, Thelma J. Howlett on February 19, 1942 in Davison. They resided in Genesee County where he managed the family farm until 1951, when they moved their growing family to Croswell, Michigan. There they owned and operated Hopkins Trucks for many years. Hop, Thelma and their family moved to Lexington in 1964 and for years maintained residences in Michigan and Florida, retiring to Florida in the 70's. During their time in the Croswell-Lexington area, Hop was very active in his community and church. He was a member of the Lion's Club, and a volunteer fireman. One of the things that he was most proud of was that he helped establish Little League in the area, helped to construct the playing field, managed and coached a team for several years. Hop and Thelma shared a mutual love for boating, flying and golf. They enjoyed traveling, and were privileged to have been able to visit much of the world. But most of all, Hoppy held dear his relationship with God, his family, and his friends. He lost Thelma in 1999. Surviving are his son, Michael (Myrna) Hopkins of Grand Haven; daughters, Brenda (Ron) Bricker of Ithaca, New York, Cindy (Donn) Ellis of Linden, Lisbeth (John) Polasek of Vicksburg, and Jayne (Randy) Plonka of St. Clair. Hop was the proud Grampa of 13; and 'Poppy Hoppy' to 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, their families and other relatives in Michigan and Indiana. Besides Thelma, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Esther Knapp, Marie Owen; and brother Raymond Hopkins and many dear friends. Arrangements provided by Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Online condolences and tributes may be posted on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
