Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Sharp Funeral Home Miller Road Chapel. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery. Larry’s greatest loves in life were his family, his “fur babies” and his music. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, those desiring to remember his legacy may make memorial contributions to the Genesee County Humane Society and/or the Flint Institute of Music Scholarship Fund.
The symphony of Larry’s life began on July 13, 1926. He was born in Parkerton, Wyoming to Clarence and Isabelle (Lawrence) Shoup. From Wyoming, his family moved to Pennsylvania and then to Flint, Michigan. He received his love for music from his father, who was a member of the John Philip Sousa band. Larry went on to become a proficient musician, mastering piano, saxophone, clarinet, organ, flute and many other instruments. He was working at AC Spark Plug in Flint, Michigan when Elizabeth Ann Windle came waltzing into his life. They were married on April 5, 1952. Their sweet duet became a quartet when they welcomed their son, Timothy K. Shoup and then their daughter, Wendy G. Shoup.
Larry was an active member of Farnumwood Presbyterian Church, now Trinity United Presbyterian Church, where he sang and accompanied the choir for 50 years. He also served as a deacon and elder of the church. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians and played in the AC Band and Flint Concert Band.
Music was the harmony, and family was the melody to Larry’s life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son, Timothy (Betty) Shoup; daughter, Wendy Shoup; grandchildren Zachary (Jenni) Zintel, Holly Zintel, Allison (Josiah) Hillaker and Lawren Shoup; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Levi and Julia Hillaker; special nieces and nephews and his “fur babies.”
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Shoup; parents, Clarence and Isabelle Shoup; brothers Raymond Shoup and Ron Shoup.
The song of Larry’s life will play in the hearts and minds of his beloved family forever.
