Lawrence King

September 28, 1953 — April 17, 2017

Lawrence A. King, 63, died at home in Linden MI on April 17th, 2017. He was born in Flint, MI on September 28th, 1953 to Raymond and Catherine King as the youngest of three children. He met the love of his life, Debi, in 1968 in Livonia MI. They were married in 1974 and spent over 48 wonderful years together. Larry put himself through college by working in a small factory in Plymouth MI and playing keyboard and singing vocals in a band. He received a BA in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Detroit in 1975 and went on to receive a Masters of Architecture from the University of Michigan in 1977. Larry began working for U of M Flint in 1981 and helped build the campus from two buildings to what it is today. He genuinely loved his work and took pride in everything he did for the university. His attention to detail and careful planning can be seen everywhere you look on campus. His children were born in 1978 (Peter) and 1980 (Kendra) and were everything to him. In them, he instilled his love of music, the outdoors, his do-it-yourself mentality and his fantastic sense of humor. They also took away the greatest lesson of respect and love for their friends and spouses from watching him and Debi together. Larry took an interest in coaching soccer when the kids were young and went on to coach many, many teams, year round, for 15 years. He also played on teams for many years while they lived in Flushing. He was one of the founding fathers of the Flushing travel soccer leagues and also coached JV girls at Flushing High School for a time. After the kids moved out, Larry and Debi built their dream home on a lake. Any that know them, were not surprised to learn they actually designed and built the house themselves, with a little help from their kids. Living on the lake was the perfect lifestyle for them. Larry got to do what he loved best, which was relax on his boats and fish for hours and hours. Most of all, Larry will be remembered by all for his humble, quiet grace, his respect for others, his patience, his smile and his willingness to help anyone that he could. He loved and was loved by his family and friends and will never be forgotten. He is survived by his wife Deborah, children Peter(Kelly) and Kendra(John), grandson Elliott., siblings Gary(Linda) and Kathi(Mike), mother-in-law Trudy and many cousins, nephews, nieces and dear friends. Our special thanks to Diane Kremer, RN, for her care and guidance through this entire journey. There will be a memorial celebration at U of M Flint on May 21st, 2017 in the French Hall Theater from 12-6 pm. Service will be at 2:00pm, followed by a stone laying ceremony in the peace garden. Memorial attendees are encouraged to bring a small stone. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lobdell-Bennett Lake Fish Stocking Fund in Larry's name (lobdellbennettlake.com/fish-stocking-program.html).
