“I know a girl from an island.
She stands apart from the crowd.
She loves the sea and her people.
She makes her whole family proud.
Sometimes, the world seems against you.
The journey may leave a scar.
But scars could heal and reveal just where [and who] you are”.
-Song of the Ancestors (Moana).
We said “Aloha” to Keegan Elizabeth Sergent, Age 19, of Fenton, on February 14, 2025. A Funeral Mass in her honor will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 22, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton. Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects during visitation from 4-8 PM on Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, and from 10 AM until the time of Mass on Saturday at the church. For those wishing to honor her memory, contributions may be made to Mott's Children's Hospital or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A cherished first daughter and granddaughter, Keegan was born on July 2, 2005, in Grand Blanc, MI with the biggest and most beautiful green eyes. She loved to dance at Ms. Bridget's School Of Dance (8 yrs), go camping and stargazing, participate in Girl Scouts and play with her golden retrievers Archie and Indy (who predeceased her).
Keegan was a talented and accomplished artist, there was no medium that she couldn't master from pencil to paints, charcoal to wire, markers to complex LEGO sets and finally, crocheting gifts for family. Keegan attended Hartland schools, St John's, and graduated from Fenton High in 2023. She loved being surrounded by family every year for Thanksgiving dinner at Uncle Scott and Aunt Pams who always set aside the best turkey leg for her. Keegan also found a second family at the Fenton Hotel where she worked as a hostess.
When Keegan was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer in 2022, it was her indomitable spirit, her family, and her artmaking that helped her on her most-difficult journey. Through sheer will and a fierce wit, she exceeded Dr's expectations multiple times by her determination to live, to travel, to find the most beautiful and rare Pokemon cards, and by taking her treatment “one day at a time.” She was grateful for the supportive nurses and medical staff of Mott Children's Hospital, especially Lyn, Amy, Nicole and Karen, as well at St. Augustine Catholic Church, who did so much for our family.
Keegan's heart belonged to her family, and her favorite place to be was in Maui, where she created beautiful memories traveling with her mother and brothers—Jack and Jesse—whom she adored. Proud survivors include her loving mother, Elizabeth Anne Sergent; her devoted brothers, Jack Sergent (Jordan) and Jesse Sergent; aunts and uncles Scott (Pamela), Allison, Jonathan (Tamera) Sergent, and Mary (David) Schlitt. Cousins: Andrew (Melissa), Taylor, Max (Daniella), Connor (Mylissa) Sergent, Evan, Ella and Tristan Schlitt. Second-cousins: Kyler, Ben and Elodie Sergent and best friends Rose Gilman and Lorelei Preiss.
She was predeceased by her grandfather Jack B. Sergent, grandmother Mary E. Sergent, aunts Dawn Sergent and Captain Helen J. Walker, and cousin Dylan Schlitt. Tributes can be shared in her memory at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
