John & Leila Schaefer

d. May 12, 2020

John K. “Jack” Schaefer , of Grand Blanc, formerly of Davison, died on May 12, just a few hours after the love of his life, Leila.  For nearly 40 years he ran the family business, “Schaefer’s Office Supplies”, located in downtown Flint.  Born in 1922 in Bloomington, Illinois to Harold and Elizabeth (Harwood) Schaefer, he was raised in Civic Park and was a member of Community Presbyterian Church.  When WWII interrupted his education, he joined the Army Air Corps and became a B-29 pilot.  In 1947 he married Leila Haney and they raised their family in Flint. Jack was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan and was a life member of Optimist International.  He loved his family, his church, golf, travel, and U-M football.  Jack was preceded in death by his brothers “Howdy” and Dick and his sister Joey.  He is survived by his son John (Gwen Wyatt) and his daughter Nancy (Barnett Epstein), and many nieces and nephews.

Leila F. Schaefer , of Grand Blanc, formerly of Davison, died on May 12, just a few hours before her husband of 72 years and the love of her life, Jack.  Born in 1919 in Linton, Indiana to William and Odessa (Shepherd) Haney, she moved to Flint as a girl and graduated from Northern High School, later becoming a bookkeeper for Victor George at his auto dealership.  In 1947 she married Jack Schaefer, made a home and they raised two children.  Leila loved her family, her friends, cooking, gardening, and her travels around the country with Jack after his retirement.  Leila was preceded in death by her brothers Bill and Norman, and sisters Wilma, Vera, Melba Rose, and Joyce.  She is survived by her son John (Gwen Wyatt), and her daughter Nancy (Barnett Epstein), and many nieces and nephews.
