John Wieloch

January 27, 1938 — January 9, 2022

WIELOCH John Jerome  was born in Wausau, WI to Jacob and Regina (Richey) Wieloch. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Randolph.  In 1961, he married Judith Pomplun of Portage, a nursing student that he met while hospitalized for an appendectomy.  The couple lived in Madison while John pursued a degree in electrical engineering from U-Wisconsin.  Upon graduation, he took a job with General Motors at the Chevrolet Engine Plant on Van Slyke Blvd in Flint, Michigan.  He worked at the Engine Plant for many decades, eventually serving as Superintendent of Maintenance.   After retiring, John became a Registered Nurse and worked for Genesis Health Systems until retiring for good.  Despite its lack of topography, John came to love Flint and refused to leave until forced to do so by his children in 2020.

John valued learning.  In addition to his two careers, he also obtained an associates degree in business, studied the piano and Spanish.  John loved sports and played for many years on the Schitz hockey team in the 40+ league at the IMA.  He loved fishing, whether trips up north with buddies or to Lake Nepessing with his kids.  He enjoyed many rounds of golf, softball, and bowling.  After retirement, he loved working out and shooting baskets at the YMCA with his friends.  He participated in the Crim road race for many years.  He is remembered for his ability to build and fix almost anything.

He was a great father,  grandfather, brother, and friend.  Most of all, he was devoted to his wife, Judy, who passed away in April.  The family would like to recognize the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Kindred Hospice (Flint and San Diego) and Seasons Hospice (San Diego) who took such wonderful care of John and Judy at the end of their lives.

John is survived by his daughter Jennifer Wieloch Goswami (Joydeep), son Joseph Wieloch (Waldina), daughter/niece Monica Pomplun Atterberry; grandchildren, Marissa, Sameer, Isabella, and Jacob. A Zoom Memorial is planned for January 30th.  If you were a friend of John's and would like to participate, please email goswamifamilyca@gmail.com
