SMARNEY, John Martin - Age 78, of Durand, died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 9450 Duffield Road, Gaines. Fr. Robert McKeon officiating. Burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Home, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek Monday from 1-3 and 5-8 PM and Tuesday at church from 10:00 AM until time of service. A Chaplet of Divine Mercy service will be held at the funeral home Monday at 7:00 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund. John was born April 27, 1933 in Detroit, the son of John and Helen (Smolski) Smarney. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Joanne M. Sparr September 14, 1957 in Farmington. He had resided in Durand since 1969 coming from Redford. John retired from Kessel's and had worked for Hamady Bros. Grocery for 20 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Gaines, Knights of Columbus Council #12186 and Swartz Creek V.F.W. Post #3720. Surviving are: wife, Joanne; daughter, Julie Smarney of Warren; brother, Jerome Smarney of Algonac. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, John M.
