John was born on January 29, 1941, in the Bronx, New York. John was a graduate of Marist Prep and Marist College, and obtained a Master’s in Counseling from Ohio University.
John began his teaching career in 1961 as a Brother in the Marist Order which took him to Wheeling, West Virginia, Eugene, Oregon and Chicago, Illinois before bringing him to Flint, Michigan in 1970 to help open Powers Catholic High School. John was a Marist Brother until 1975 and continued teaching at Powers Catholic High School. John was a pillar of the Powers Catholic community, serving generations of students as an administrator, teacher, and guidance counselor for 44 years. After his time at Powers, he served as principal of St. John Vianney Elementary for three years. John was an avid supporter of his students, always advocating for their best interests and cheering on countless sports teams. Watching his former students flourish was one of his greatest joys.
John loved music, dancing, Notre Dame football, and the Detroit Tigers. More than anything, he loved spending time with family and friends. Whether it was in Hilton Head, New York, Naples, Cleveland, or Flint, family and friends meant the world to John.
John is preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy (Wolf) Reynolds and brother Edward Reynolds. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years Beth Reynolds, brother George (Barbara) Reynolds and his sisters Mary (Doug) Reynolds-Powell and Dorothy Reynolds (Ed Quirk), daughters Theresa (Joe) Skinner, Maria (Rich) Hwang, Stacey Reynolds, and sons Thomas (Julia) Oh, and Michael Oh, Jarrod Lince and John (Trisha) Reynolds. John is also remembered lovingly by his 14 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and his dear nieces and nephews.
John was known for his handwritten notes of congratulations or appreciation. In his memory the family encourages those who knew him uphold this tradition and handwrite a similar note to someone.
