MURPHY, John Thomas - Age 79, of Flushing, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2010, and fought a short and courageous battle. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Living Word Church of God, 6325 Calkins Road, Flint. Pastor Tim McKenzie and Reverend Manley Pierce will officiate. Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek Monday and Tuesday from 1-8 PM and at church Wednesday from 10:00 AM until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Flushing Historical Society or Living Word Church of God Youth Group. Born in Baltimore, MD on January 15, 1931, to Archiebald and Mary (Smith) Murphy. He graduated from Loyola High School and Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. John served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His career with General Motors Financial spans from 1952, through 1992. After retirement he worked as a consultant for G.M. Audit Dept. until the time of his illness. John is a member of Living Word Church of God, Flushing Historical Society, American Legion Flushing Post 283, G.M. Salary Retirement Club, and past president of the Clarendon Dance Club. He was dedicated to his model train hobby. John leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 27 years, Evelyn (Maxwell-Barney), four children, Joann (Pat) Cooper of Lake Orion, John T. Jr. (Meg) of Houston, TX, Susan (Bill) Jackson, of Grand Blanc, Steven (Jamie) of Charleston, SC, and their mother, Joan Stedron. Stepchildren, Jari Lynn (John) Sutton of Reno, NV, Jill (Doug) Poe of Flushing, and Jeff (Cameron) Barney of Saxapahaw, NC. Sixteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Special family and friends, sister-in-law, Margaret (Jack) Kildee, sister-in-law, Glenna Maxwell, brother-in-law, Ed (Jill) Maxwell, Deb Taft, the Al-Dabagh family, Fab Five, and Life Group. John was preceded in death by his parents, sister, MaryLou Lonakonis, father and mother in-law, Mildred and Jack Maxwell, brother-in-law, Arthur Maxwell.
