John Mckellar, Sr.

McKELLAR, John David Sr. - Age 91, of Grand Blanc, died August 7, 2017. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, August 11, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church of Flint, 746 S. Saginaw St., Flint. The Rev. Paul Ytterock will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5-8 PM Thursday at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint and from 10 AM until the time of service Friday at the church. Those desiring may make contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Flint. David was born September 6, 1925 in Flint, the son of Hector Campbell and Mabel (Ellenwood) McKellar. He was married to Thelma L. DeMott on August 21, 1948 in Flint. David was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II as a medic attached to the Marines. He saw combat on Okinawa and later served in China. David was a graduate of Cleveland College of Mortuary Science. He was a licensed mortician and funeral director for 40 years, starting his career with Algoe-Gundry Funeral Home, then with Dodds-Dumanois Funeral Home. He was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church of Flint, where he served terms as Deacon, Elder, and President of the Bishop Class. David was a long-time member of the Downtown Flint Lion's Club, serving a term as President. David especially enjoyed retirement summers at the family's northern Michigan home in Bellaire. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and as a genuinely kind and good man. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; children, John David (Kristin) McKellar, Jr. of Grand Blanc, Andrew DeMott McKellar of Charlevoix and Martha Murray (Patrick) Gilmore of Grand Blanc; grandchildren, Matthew H. McKellar, J. Patrick (Jamie) McKellar, Arthur H. McKellar, Andrea (Ryan) Loveless, Suzanne (Steven) DesJardins, Sarah E. Gilmore; great-grandchildren, Jake, Brock, J. Christian, Austin and Makenna. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Campbell McKellar. Loving gratitude for Dr. Paul Schroeder, Dr. Matthew Weiss, Dr. Jean Nelson, Dr. Amy Daros, Zelma and the worship group from Faith Baptist Church in Davison, Heartland Hospice, and staff and friends of the Oaks at Woodfield.
