John Arthur Hurt

John Arthur Hurt, passed away on July 31, 2023, in Byron, MI, with his family by his side.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Friday, August 4, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 9450 Duffield Rd, Gaines, MI 48436. Visitation will be held 2-9 PM Thursday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, MI 48473 where a rosary will be prayed at 7 PM. Visitation will also be held from 10 AM - 11 AM Friday at the church. 

John was born on February 12, 1942, in Dearborn, MI. He was the son of Emory Clinton and Lucille Genevie (Teschker) Hurt.

John served his country with honor as a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He married Mary "Cathy" Jackymack on June 2, 1967. 

After his military service, John pursued a career as a lineman for Detroit Edison. For three decades, he worked tirelessly to ensure that communities had access to electricity. 

In 2001, John retired from his career at Detroit Edison and embraced the next chapter of his life with enthusiasm. He enjoyed spending quality time with his loved ones and creating cherished memories together. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gaines and a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 37 years. 

Surviving are: Cathy Hurt of Byron and together they raised two children: Shannon (Paul) Combs of Hartland and David Hurt of Durand. John adored his (7) grandchildren and (5) great-grandchildren, finding immense joy in being actively involved in their lives.

He is also survived by his brother Emory (Joyce) Hurt of Indian River and sister Madeline (Fred) Hagelthorn of Howell and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elaine Innes.

Those who knew John will remember him as someone who always put others before himself. He possessed an unwavering sense of integrity that influenced everyone he met.

John Arthur Hurt will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His spirit and legacy of compassion will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him. In this time of grieving, let us remember the joy he brought to our lives and find solace in the love we shared with him.
