GERYCH, John Sr. -- Age 90, of Fenton, died November 17, 2009. Funeral services will be 1 PM Tuesday, November 24 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, Pastor Dale Swihart and Rev. Fr. David Harvey officiating. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton. Visitation will be 7-9 PM Sunday and Monday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Fenton Community Fund (FCF), 500 S. Saginaw St., Suite 200, Flint MI US 48502, checks should be made payable to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, FCF. Mr. Gerych was born January 19, 1919 in Detroit the son of William and Ann Gerych. He attended school in Wayne, MI. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He saw alot of combat in his 4 years in the Army. He married Marjorie Joy Gazley on November 12, 1943 in Colorado Springs, CO; she preceded him in death May 28, 1998. He had resided in Fenton since 1945. Mr. Gerych was a grower of perennial and seasonal flowers and in 1966 he founded Gerych's Greenhouse which is now operated by his son Jon. He was a life member of the Fenton V.F.W. Curtis Wolverton Post 3243, a member of the American Legion. He was a past member of the Lions Club and D.A.V. Mr. Gerych was loved by the community. He had a gregarious personality. He was a storyteller. He was known by all and generous to all. Mr. Gerych served as Grand Marshall of the Fenton Freedom Festival Parade in 2005. Surviving are: daughter, Chris and husband Don Venema of Grand Rapids; son, Jon and wife Jo-Ann Gerych of Fenton; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie; daughter, Pam Pierce; granddaughter Kim Venema; sisters, Mary and Kathryn; and brother Pete.
